How Do You Make a Homemade Wood Sign?Family Signs
Wooden signs adorned with catchy sayings have been extremely popular as of late. This is evident by browsing Instagram and Facebook, every gorgeously designed home seems to have a family oriented or a seasonally themed wood sign as an accent piece. If you are thinking about adding a wood sign to your home’s décor, it’s not very difficult to find one. Your local art store or even department store will probably have several options for you to choose from. But, if you are looking for a sign that has a phrase that is special to you and your family, you can make your own custom wood sign, for significantly less than the store bought one will cost you.
Below we will walk you through every step of making your own custom wood sign.
Before we start building the sign, we suggest gathering all of the materials and tools needed. There is nothing special here, everything you need you probably have at home already or you can pick up at your local hardware store.
- A piece of ½-inch plywood which will act as your background and sign base. Cut the plywood to your desired sign size.
- 1 x 2 wooden strips to frame your sign (enough length to go around your plywood).
- 2 cans of spray paint or 2 cans of paint (1 colour for the background and 1 for the wording)
- Paint brushes (if not using spray paint)
- Contact paper or adhesive vinyl
- Painters Tape
- Finishing nails, brad nailer, or wood glue
- Hammer (if using nails)
Once you have gathered your material, you are ready to create your sign. We suggest making your sign outdoors or in a well-ventilated area, like your garage with the doors open.
With your plywood already cut to your desired size, your first step is to fully paint one side. Start with the paint you chose for your background colour and spray or brush the entire face of the plywood.
While the plywood background is drying, you can choose and design the phrase that will be displayed. If you are tech-savvy, you can create your design using any graphic design tool that you are familiar with such as Photoshop or Paint tools. There are also online tools you can use to create your design.
Once you are happy with your design, print it out on contact paper using the actual font size you want displayed on your sign. This is where you need to summon your inner crafter, as you will need to cut the design to create a stencil. If you have access to a machine that cuts stencils like a silhouette machine, now’s the time to take advantage of it. If you are artistically inclined, you can hand write your saying on the painted plywood as well.
If using the stencil, place the sticky side of the cut stencils on the sign. Arrange the words and letters carefully to match your design. Once the stencil is affixed to your board, or you have hand drawn your phrase, you can paint the phrase using the paint color for letters. To prevent any bleeding, let the paint dry before removing the adhesive stencil.
Finally add your frame to the sign using the wood strips. Cut the 1 x 2 strips to the appropriate length of your sign (remember to cut the sides or the top and bottom piece 2” longer than the plywood to account for the adjoining frame). If you want to paint or stain the frame, you should do that prior to affixing to the plywood. Nail the frame to the plywood using the finishing nails or the brad nailer or use wood glue to secure the frame to the board.
Congratulations, you have built your own custom wood sign that will match your décor flawlessly and that highlights a phrase that resonates with you and your family. The possibilities for these custom wooden signs are endless. You can make one for special occasions, different seasons, or just to update the look and feel of a room, enjoy!
